On the Wings of the Wind

- a project combining adventure and environmental research -

Gérard is off on another flight around the world. This time, by motor-glider. Imagine, soaring in delicious silence, motor off, above some of the world's most stunning scenery? Flying in harmony with nature, catching a ride from the wind and the warmth of the sun.

The Super Ximango - a glider with an independent spirit - is built by Aeromot in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, where it has been specially prepared for the long odyssey ahead. The advantage of a glider with an engine is obviously that it can take off unassisted by another aircraft and can reach its destination when conditions do not allow for gliding.

After taking-off from Rio de Janeiro on 20th June 2001, Gérard headed in a northwestly direction up across the Amazon, through Central America and up the western USA towards Canada, Alaska and the Bering Straits. Skimming through Eastern Russia, he will turn down through the Far East, across Asia to Europe, and return to Brazil by the South Atlantic.

Gérard will make the flight solo - well, most of it. Due to the requirement to carry a Russian navigator on board on internal flights in Russia, the need to carry extra fuel to cross the South Atlantic and space and weight limitations in general, Margi will stay earthbound. She will be responsible for obtaining flight clearances as well as general coordination of the project.

Weather conditions are always a concern to pilots and sailors alike. Recently, the whole world has witnessed drastic climatic changes. Everything would indicate that these are side-effects of air pollution and global warming. Special POPs filters and ozone sensors installed on board will collect data on air pollution to be analysed at various universities in Brazil and England.
