“THE WATERS OF BRASIL”

Going in search of the purest waters of Brazil

It is estimated that in 25 years’ time, 90% of the world’s population will be facing a shortage of water. Brazil has the largest reserves of fresh water on Earth, 16% of the world’s total.

In mid-2003, Gérard and Margi are planning another flight around the world, covering 50.000 km. But this time, with a difference. The entire flight will be carried out in Brazil, which is really a whole world in just one country!

The single-engine to be used this time is be a Lake Renegade amphibian sea-plane, because the purpose of this project is to map the country’s main rivers and lakes. In searching for, cataloguing and analyzing the water in the most distant corners of Brazil, the hope is to identify areas that have not been impacted by mankind so that they can be preserved.

Objectives: The principal objective of “Brasil das Águas” is to make the first comprehensive collection of data on water from the length and breadth of the country, always using the same methods of analysis. Various Brazilian universities are involved with sub-projects in parallel.

The aircraft: The seaplane will be transformed into a flying laboratory, equipped with measuring equipment, fridges to conserve the samples and fixed cameras to register the points where water is taken. In places where it is not feasible to land, it will be possible to collect water samples using a special mechanism and skimming along on the water surface.

As well as discovering rivers and lakes that have not been contaminated, a photographic record will be made with a view to encouraging the authorities to protect these places and to educate society in general on the importance of this precious resource and the need to preserve it.
